Banana War in Europe
Description of Banana war
The Concise Encyclopedia of the European Union describes banana war in the following terms: [1] The EU gives advantageous trade terms to banana growers in the former dependencies (mainly in the Caribbean) of its member states. In the late 1990s the USA objected, seeking equal access for Central American bananas. The WTO voted in favour of the USA. The EU rejected the ruling (see more in this European encyclopedia). The USAretaliated with import duties on other, unrelated, EU products. The EUprotested that the USA did not come with clean hands to the court, since American corporations that owned Central American plantations made party political contributions in Washington. The affair epitomised the bad-tempered trade atmosphere prevailing between the two blocs.
