Definition of Bate’s Case

((1606), 2 St. Tr. 371.) Bate, a merchant, refused to pay an import duty on currants, ordered by letters patent from the King, over and above the statutory poundage of 2s. 6d. per cwt. Held, the King can impose what he pleases. See Bill of Riyhts (3)
