Anciently, an officer appointed by the Gustos Rotxilorum (q.v.), to keep the county records and to assist the justices of the peace in quarter sessions not only in drawing indictments entering judgments, issuing process, etc., but also in administrative business
The Local Government Act, 1888, converted the clerk of the peace into clerk to the county council, except in the county of London
