County Courts in Europe
Definition of County Courts
Statutory local and inferior Courts of record for the trial of claims to debt or damages not exceeding 100, and to claims in equity, where the subject-matter does not exceed 500. Actions are generally to be tried without a jury, except in claims in respect of libel, slander, malicious prosecution, false imprisonment, seduction or breach of promise of marriage, where any party may require a jury. (Administration of Justice Act, 1925, s. 19.)
The old County Court (or shiremote) was presided over by the sheriff; the suitors (i. e., the freemen of the county) were the Judges. It had jurisdiction over all pleas (except pleas of the Crown) which arose within the shire. The County Courts were the principal civil Courts until the system of assizes was introduced
