European Movement in Europe

Description of European Movement

The Concise Encyclopedia of the European Union describes european movement in the following terms: [1] Founded in the flush of post-war enthusiasm, the European Movement, with Winston Churchill, Prime Minister Alcide de Gasperi of Italy and Paul-Henri Spaak of Belgium among its honorary presidents, organised the Congress of Europe in 1948, which led to the establishment of the Council of Europe in 1949. The European Movement has remained in existence as an all-party Europe-wide pressure group for integration, albeit with limited funds and dwindling influence.
