Master Of The Rolls in Europe
Definition of Master Of The Rolls
He was originally keeper of the records and assistant to the Lord Chancellor. Subsequently, in the reign of Edward I, he acquired judicial authority in the Court of Chancery. In more modern times any suit, petition, etc., could be heard in the first instance by the Master of the Rolls, as a deputy for the Lord Chancellor. By the Judicature Act, 1873, s. 5, the Master of the Rolls was made a member of the High Court of Justice, and by the Judicature Act, 1881, s. 2, he became a Judge of the Court of Appeal
