Public Safety Policy in Europe

The Use by the Spanish Police of the Situational Prevention Theories to the Public Safety Policy

Jesus Bernal, from the University of Oviedo, made a contribution to the 2012 Annual Conference of the European Society of Criminology, in the category “Crime and Society,” under the title “The Use by the Spanish Police of the Situational Prevention Theories to the Public Safety Policy”. Here is the abstract: The Situational Crime Prevention Theories have been applied in Spain not only by Researchers, but also by the Police Forces in their role of Managers of Public Safety. The application of those theories can be studied in two different areas of the Police work: reduction and prevention of the traditional criminality and the prevention of the new criminal topics and techniques in the context of the Social Phenomenon of Globalization. In the first Area we study the participation of the Police in the Community Prevention Activities and the Policy Strategies of reduction of opportunities to commit crime in the context of the risk caused by routine activities: driving, leisure, education, and commercial activities. We consider that the strategies aimed to increase the perception of the effort and difficulties and to reduce the rewards and benefits of crime are effective in the fields of the ideological terrorism, illegal immigration, and the new types of organized criminality.
