Rule in Europe
Definition of Rule
(1) A regulation made by a Court of justice or a public office with reference to the conduct of business therein. Rules made under the authority of an Act of Parliament have statutory effect. Rules of Court are made by the Judges under the Judicature Acts for the regulation of practice and procedure. (2) An order or direction made by a Court of justice in an action or other proceeding. A rule is either (i) absolute in the first instance, or (ii) nisi, i. e., calling upon the opposite party to show cause why the rule applied for should not be granted. If no sufficient cause is shown, the rule is made absolute; otherwise it is discharged. (3) A principle of the law, e.g., the rule in Shelley’s Case (q.v.)
