Social Protection Committee (SPC)
The Social Protection Committee serves as a vehicle for cooperative exchange of knowledge between Member States and the European Commission in the social field. Cooperation on issues such as the fight against poverty and social exclusion, pensions, health care and long-term care exists within the framework of the Open Method of Coordination. Under this framework Member States agree on broad political objectives which are implemented in national strategies.
SPC is composed of delegates from each Member State and the Commission. The Committee elects a Chairperson, who is aided by a “bureau” consisting of, inter alia, the Commission and Vice Presidents from the current and the succeeding Presidency (currently Ireland and Lithuania).
