Definition of Stranding

Does not occur when a vessel takes the ground in the ordinary and usual course of navigation, so that she will float again on the flow of the tide ; but it occurs if the vessel takes the ground by reason of some unusual or accidental occurrence, e.g., in consequence of an unknown and unusual obstruction in the harbour or on being driven on to rocks
