Definition of Eyre<\/h2>\n

\n

(Latin, itcr a journey.) The justices in eyre were regularly established in 1176, with a delegated power from the King’s Great Court or Aula Ttegia, and they made their circuit round the kingdom once in seven years, for the purpose of trying causes, and reviewing the whole working of the local government. They were directed by Magna Carta to be sent into every county once a year ; but ” as the power of the justices of assize increased so these justices itinerant vanished away ” (Coke)<\/p>\n<\/h4>\n
