Definition of Bill Of Lading

A document signed and delivered by the master of a ship to the shippers on goods being shipped. It specifies the name of the master, the port and destination of the ship, the goods, the consignee, and the rate of freight. Copies are kept by the master, the shipper and the consignee. It is a document of title transferable by indorsement and delivery, giving the holder the right to sue thereon. (Bills of Lading Act, 1855.) See Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1924; ftewell v.
