Definition of Cinque Ports

The five harbours of Hastings, Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich, and two other towns, Winchelsea and Rye, .subsequently added to their number. Lying more immediately exposed to attacks from the French coast, they were placed under the especial custody of a Lord Warden, who had a local jurisdiction in relation to civil suits and proceedings. (Cinque Ports Act, 1855.)
