Definition of Mens Rea
Guilty mind : an evil intention, or a knowledge of the wrongfulness of an act. There is a presumption that it is an essential ingredient in every offence, liable to be displaced either by the words of the statute, or by the subject-matter with which it deals. (Wright, J., in Sherras v. De Eutzen (q.v.).) See Intention
