Definition of Piracy

(1) The act of robbery on the seas within the jurisdiction of the admiral, and not being an act of war. Certain acts also constitute piracy by statute. Piracy is punishable with penal servitude for life, unless it is accompanied by attempted murder, or violence dangerous to life, in which case the punishment is death. (Piracy Act, 1837, s. 2.)
