Definition of Privateers
Vessels belonging to private owners which in time of war were furnished with a commission from the State, known as letters of marque, empowering them to carry on war against the enemy, and to capture enemy vessels and property. ” Privateering is and remains abolished.” (Declaration of Paris, 1856.)
