Definition of Santos V. I Midge
((1860), 8 C. B. (N.S.) 861). The legality of a contract made abroad is governed prima facie by the law of the place where the contract is made.
The defendants agreed to sell to the plaintiff, a British subject, some slaves in Brazil. Slavery was unlawful by English law, but lawful by Brazilian law. Held, the contract was valid
