Definition of Bona Vacantia
Goods without an apparent owner in which no one claims a property but the King, such as royal fish, shipwrecks, treasure trove. In Roman law it was property left by a deceased person who had no successor. It generally went to the fiscus
In default of any person taking an absolute interest in the property of an intestate, it belongs to the Crown, or to the Duchy of Lancaster, or to the Duke of Cornwall, as the case may be, a bona vacantia and in lieu of any right to escheat. (Administration of Estates Act, 1925, s. 46, sub-s. 1 (vi.))
