Definition of House Of Lords

The Upper House of Parliament ; the assembly of the lords, spiritual and temporal. The lords spiritual are the two archbishops and the senior bishops of the Church of England. The lords temporal are (1) the peers of England, of Great Britain and of the United Kingdom ; (2) the representative peers of Scotland and Ireland ; (3) life peers : the six lords of Appeal in ordinary. The Lord Chancellor is Speaker and President of the House.
The House of Lords exercise judicial authority (1) in the trial of peers fur treason or felony ; (2) in claims of peerage ; (3) in disputed elections of representative peers ; and (4) as a Supreme Court of Appeal from the Court of Appeal in England, and the Superior Courts of Scotland and Northern Ireland
