Definition of Reference
The decision of a question by a person nominated for the purpose, called a referee, in lieu of the ordinary judicial procedure. The proceedings are usually private, and the conclusion of the referee is termed an award. Questions of detail and calculation are often referred by the Court to Chambers or a Master
