Serjeants-at-Law in Europe
Definition of Serjeants-at-Law
Barristers of superior degree of the Order of the Coif, to which they were called by writ under the Great Seal. They formed an Inn called Serjeants’ Inn, with buildings in Fleet Street and Chancery Lane. Formerly they were supposed to serve the Crown (hence their name, Serjeants or servientes ad Icgcm) ; they had a right of exclusive audience in the Court of Common Pleas; and every Judge of the superior Courts of Common Law had to be a Serjeant.
