Definition of Admiral Or Lord High Admiral

An officer entrusted by the Crown with the charge of the seas. To naval were added judicial functions in the reign of Edward III, when the Court of the Admiral was established. The criminal jurisdiction of this Court was ultimately transferred to the Central Criminal Court and the Judges of Assize, and the civil jurisdiction of the Court, which became the High Court of Admiralty, was vested in 1875 in the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division of the High Court. The naval functions of the Lord High Admiral have, since 1827, been exercised by the commissioners for executing the office, i. e., the Admiralty
