Freehold Tenure in Europe
Definition of Freehold Tenure
At the time of the Conquest land was held by military tenure, socage tenure, or copyhold tenure. Both military and socage tenures were freehold tenures ; they were held in return for services which a free man might not think it derogatory to perform. In 1660, military tenure was abolished and the Land became socage tenure. See Estate ; Leaseholds
